The Mushrooms of Merina

This past summer, the family took a vacation to a tzimmer up north in the small yishuv of Meona. During the course of our conversation with the proprietors, we learned that the husband worked in the local industry, a mushroom farm, and would we like a tour?

Yes, please!

It wasn’t a very long tour, but it was fascinating nonetheless. We were shown into the grow house, and given a brief but complete account of how the mushrooms are farmed. The spores are imported from Holland, and every three months, they’re harvested and the entire rooms is sterilized and reset. There were several such rooms. While there weren’t any exotic mushrooms to be seen, I was able to explain to him that champignon was in fact a French word.
