Machane Yehuda: Shlomo Mizrachi

On Rechov HaCharuv (Carob St.) in Machane Yehuda, nestled between the fish stores, is a small produce store worth seeking out. Shlomo Mizrachi doesn’t focus on stocking the usual produce you can find throughout the shuk. They have a more eclectic mix of produce. I found limes here before anywhere else, gorgeous purple and white streaked eggplant, shallots, and on my most recent trip, I found two varieties of hot peppers. Jalapeños are rare in this country, but I have seen them before. Habañeros, however took me completely by surprise. I hadn’t seen them since the last time I was in the Union Square Farmer’s Market. I regretted not buying more when I had the chance. I did seed them some of them, so I’m hoping to maybe raise a few of them, if I get lucky. Jalapeños, too.

This is one my favorite shops and of the first stores I head to when I get to Machane Yehuda. You never know what they’re going to have, or how long it’s going to be there.
